I use a natural gas unit heater. It is hung from the garage clg. and
works really well, but you have to pipe natural gas to them and put a
flue through the roof. May be more trouble than you want to deal with.
No fumes from them though.
There are "wall furnaces" that fit between wall studs and are typically
used in mobile homes. Sears sells them I think. They have no fan, but
do have a small flue to run to the outside. I think they are available
for both propane or natural gas.
Sometimes these heaters can be found second hand for pretty cheap, but
you have to hunt for a while.
