I've never done it, but does bolting the transmission to the cross-member
before bolting the cross-member to the chassis rails help?

On the o/d and reverse lights, I would have expected that if you had
cross-wired the switches the o/d would only work in reverse and the reverse
lights would only work in 3rd and 4th, with the manual o/d switch in the
'on' position. For both to be operative all the time you must have 12v on
the yellow/purple from the o/d switch to the o/d, and on the green/brown
from the reverse-light switch to the lamps. Since there is 12v on the green
to the reverse-light switch all the while the ignition is on, you *could*
have somehow wired this to the other two wires. However it may just be that
both switches are screwed in too far and are operated all the time. Try
backing them off a little, an arkward access problem that should be helped
by dropping the cross-member from the chassis-rails to allow you to swing
the transmission down a little.
