The mystery of the non-working headlamps has been solved. After checking
the wiring, the problem turned out to be in the turn signal switch. I had
replaced it with a new aftermarket switch a year and a half ago, and the
crimp on the blue/red wire became loose. The headlamps would come on and
go off again as the connection came and went. I have replaced it with a
new turn signal unit. I may try to repair the old switch by soldering the
loose wire more firmly in place and keep it around as a spare. This is one
instance where Lucas is firmly in the lead as far as quality and durability
go. The original switch lasted 28 years, the new 1 1/2. We'll see about
the next replacement unit. Nina
