Lindsay Porter's "MGB: Guide to Purchase and DIY Restoration" may be what
you're looking for. Available from Classic Motorbooks, Moss, and other
places (Amazon, too, I suppose).
You might also look at "MGB Restoration/Preparation/Maintenance" by Jim
Tyler, and Porter's "Step-by-step Guide to the MGB". As a guide to
originality, you might want "Original MGB, MGC and V8" by Anders Ditlev
Clausager.
You seem to be in California -- if you're in the Bay Area, you could pick
up these books and look at a few nice cars at O'Connor's Classics in
Santa Clara. Or check out Lawrie's shop (British Sportscar Center) in the
Sacramento area, or his website at www.britcars.com.
If you're near Goleta, pick up the books at Moss.
It's probably far too lengthy to try to list everything you should be
aware of when buying a B in an email message. That's why I would
recommend a good book or a visit to an expert's shop. But this list is a
great resource for any specific questions that might come up.
But here's one bit of specific advice: look out for visible rust,
incipient rust and cleverly disguised rust. In the long run, a rust-free
unit body will cost less and increase your pride of ownership more
compared to any aspect of the mechanical configuration. Otherwise, you
need to decide between chrome bumper or rubber bumper (both have their
fans, but seldom the twain shall meet), and then get the best condition
car you can afford.
Mark Davidson had this to say:
>I'm just getting into the market for an MGB... but have surprisingly been
>unable to find a good book in the local stores. What are some of the
>obvious and less obvious things to check on a B? Any help very much
>appreciated.
>
>I have looked at the team.net web site but haven't found what I'm looking
>for either! Help!
