I don't think this is the first time for retrofit.

In 1953 my Father obtained a '46 Austin 8. This car had a single
rear light. In the mid-late 50s this had to be upgraded with two lights
and reflectors placed on the rear wings.

Can any others in the gray hair set remember this or anything like it.
