Hmmm, while the *appearance* of the two shells is seemingly identical
they are not constructed identically -- at least the ones I have are not.
This may be due to the currently available reproductions not being true
to original. My "honeycomb" shell (present on my 66 B when I bought it --
definitely *not* original but the car had had a front-end encounter at
some time) has a front-to-back depth (measured at the side) of only about
3/8 to 1/2 inch (as I recall -- I went through this over a year ago) . I
bought a Moss repro slatted grill thinking to restore the correct
appearance (and hoping not to have to answer stupid questions at meets),
but this shell was over 1 inch deep, and I could not fit it into the
apparently-heavily-Bondoed opening due to the extra depth. It will have
to wait until I am ready to paint the car before I go to the trouble of
grinding off 1/4 inch of body filler all around.

Anyway, I wouldn't be too sure the honeycomb insert would fit properly in
the early shell, or vice versa, without comparing the two side-by-side. A
club meet would be a good opportunity to do this.

Paul Hunt had this to say:

>The recessed grill came in for the 1970 model year with roadster No. 187170
>(Oct 69) and GT No. 187841 (Sep 69). The honeycomb grill came in for the
>1973 model year with roadster No. 294251 and GT No. 296001 (both in Aug 72).
>The honeycomb shell is the same as the slatted shell.

If you're near Mountain View, CA,
it's the red one with the silver bootlid.
