I'm also a little puzzled; but it occurs to me, having had the gauges
apart once, that someone with a little competence in computer graphics
(Illustrator, CorelDraw) could draw up a perfectly convincing white gauge
face, print it out on high quality stock, and attach it over the original
face using a removable adhesive such as rubber cement. This would give
you a chance to evaluate the concept at the cost of about 10¢ worth of
paper, instead of a few hundred $ in gauges. Using a color laserprinter
at Kinko's (rather than an inkjet) and having it laminated should make
it durable enough to last for months, or even years if garaged.
Just a wild idea that came to mind...
