Replacing Rear Main seal....

I had to pull my engine because the clutch bearing is shot.  Since I am
in this deep I am planning on replacing the rear main seal as well.  Do
I need to remove the rear engine plate to do this, or is it just as
good to pick at the old one until I get it out and then insert a new
one?
