I have no doubt that all this is true.  To me, though, it makes little
difference, unless they used 2 different configurations for the 2 years they
used a 2 wire setup, which I doubt.  The plug on my car matches the
terminals.  What they apparently did was simply use a 3 wire plug and
terminal, and removed the extra wire.  Of course, something is going on in
that alternator, too...
