How to loosen the big oil hoses ?

I just got a new set of oil hoses, the ones that go to the oil cooler. I 
can't seem to get any of the fittings on the old ones loose. The one that 
goes to the block is especially vexing as there is not enough room to get a 
wrench around it. Any advice? (This is on a '71 MGB.)
