Hi, Ross,

You don't mention which engine is in the car but there is something to
check which you should be able to find.
This is the flywheel position sensor, which picks up a sugnal from a
magnet located on the flywheel. Often, the multiplug gets dirty and the
signal stop so the EMS thinks the motor isn't running.
The cure is to find the sensor, which, depending on the engine will be
either on the 'backplate'at the grille side (front facing) of the
engine, facing towards the cambelt end of the block. If not there, it
will be on the rim of the bellhousing-remember it has to point at the
flywheel so that'll help- you locate it.
Pull out the plug and clean it up, adding a little petroleum jelly to
the contact blades-it's also worth doing this to all the multiplugs in
the system.

I've used this trick to resurrect many a dead Ford Fiesta and the system
should be the same. Get back to me if it doesn't work.

Cheers,

Dave Hill
