I replaced the ground cable and cleaned the wire-to-terminal connection on
the (+) side. It seems to be better than ever, but it'll take a few days to
see if I've slayed that particular gremlin. :)

Alan,
A hot terminal is indicative of a resistive connection. When the
connection has some resistance, the high current draw during starting will
drop voltage across it and to power loss ends up being dissipated as heat.
the old power = voltage times current theory..). Clean up the connection
and put one of the battery terminal corrosion prevention pads on it and it
should be fine.
