Hi: I have a 66B and in the past have had temperature problems. Everything is
fixed now.
My B runs at 190 to 195 degrees F while cruising at 60 mph with an ambient temp
of 75 to 80 degrees. As the ambient temp go up to 90 degrees my B runs at about
200 degrees. I live in New Mexico at an elevation of 4000 feet (thin air) and
low humidity. Both of these factors would slightly increase the operating
temperature of MGB type cooling system. I have a 7 psi radiator cap on my B,
which is standard. The lower the operating pressure of the cooling system will
result in a higher operating temperature.
When I bought my B, there was a MGA radiator in it. And, I did not realize it
for a long time. The B and A radiators look alike from the top and front views,
but, have 3 to 4 less cores depth wise; thus, about 35% less cooling area. My
car was always overheating and leaking. 230 degrees and pegged was common. When
I replaced the radiator with the correct B model, I had an incorrect fitting
radiator cap that did not maintain 7 psi and still had some heating problems.
That is all fixed and she is running cool now.
By the way. My replacement radiator was from Moss. Made in China. The black
paint was horrible; very thick and had a poor thermo conductivity. So bad, I
striped the paint and repainted it my self. Worked much better and looked much
better. Physically, the China radiator was sound, but, I had to look a bit to
find a correct fitting radiator cap.
