Nice try, Simon, but you forgot that the coil is fed from a relay.  The
amount of current required to trigger the relay is pretty small.  I
added the diode to my ignition warning light ciruit and solved the
problem, so it is, indeed, current through the ignition light which
causes the problem. . .
