You will note that I said ester oil not PAG oil. When R-134 first came on the
scene the only oil available was PAG which as I recall comes in three
different flavors. Each compressor maker would then spec out the flavor of
PAG oil that their compressor took and predicted dire consequences if any
other oil were used. PAG is not, I repeat not, compatible with R-12 mineral
oil.
Technology marches on however, and an ester based oil came along that will mix
with R-12 mineral oil and will be picked up and carried by R-134. This allows
for easy retrofits of A/C systems.
So what oil do I use in my A/C system?
Retrofit system = Ester based oil
OE R-134 system = use the factory recommended oil.
BTW PAG stands for Poly alkyline glycol (no flames if I got the spelling
wrong)
