Definitely replace the inverted canister filter unless you enjoy
running your engine for 15 seconds without oil pressure.
Interchange should be no problem. All the filter adapters interchange.
I seem to recall that both canisters require the same cartridge. You can
replace the canister with a spin-on if cartridge availability is a
problem.
I fitted the hanging spin-on to my '69 and it works beautifully.
