This is an update to what I wrote a few days ago about the wire wheels on
Maggie the 74.5 RB B. The spokes on two wheels are loose (or worse) at
the hub.
I became aware of the problem when I was attempting a quickie lube job.
With the front end in the air, I attempted to turn the tire to the side
and noticed a 'wobble.' Checked the hub nut for tightness, then shook
the wheel at several points around the diameter. Wobble occurs at the
points where the spokes join to the outer portion of the hub; the spokes
that connect to the inner portion appear to be snug.
Per list suggestion I verified that the problem was not with worn
splines. Swapped the wheels side-to-side and the problem stayed with the
wheel.
Upon closer inspection, the area where the spokes join to the front of
the hub seem to be in decent shape; the holes do not appear to be ovaled.
However, I can rotate the hub a bit in each direction. The spokes show
rub marks, but only through the paint (the metal is shiny but not worn).
Miss Maggie is still deadlined (obviously I don't want to have a wheel
collapse on her). I am still soaking the spokes in Liquid Wrench because
I haven't any time to get out and work on her. I expect that I will have
to replace/tighten some of the spokes (I would send them off to be
refurbished but finances limit this).
Given the information here, what is the wisdom of the list? Should I
attempt to correct the problem, or just find a couple of decent wire
wheels to use until I can aford to have them all refurbished properly?
And, does anyone have two decent wire wheels, sans tires, they would let
go for what approximates a song and dance?
