Thank you everyone for your help.  I seem to have solved my problem, or
should that be problems.  I seem to have had a couple of problems, the most
obvious, and stupid of me not to notice, was the Battery clamps were loose.
After tightening those up, I had a look at the tail-light and at the wiring
diagram.  To mis-quote a cartoon character,  I hates those things.  I
noticed that the tail-light is supposed to earth thought to the body.
Looking at the nuts holding the lights in place, they all had rubber bushes
behind them, bingo no earth, I removed one of them and presto indicators
and brake-lights at the same time,

     Hay were did the radio go.  Bugger what have I done.  after much
searching, I found an inline fuse, hiding in the spaghetti under the dash.
Must have shorted it out against the body, when doing up the battery
clamps.  One fuse latter and it works like a brought one.
