I have received a number of enquiries about how this list is
progressing,
so I thought that I would send you all an update.
Some people have said that they would rather their telephone numbers not
be posted to the net, and others don't seem to mind.
My original idea was that that wouldn't have been necessary anyway.
When
we are travelling we don't all have access to the net, but we can all get
to a telephone (if we don't have one in our cars) so I thought that at
least one number, maybe more if practical, could be given to the list for
emergencies. The person on the end of that line would be maintaining a
'help list', on their computer. A call to them would necessitate them
finding the nearest volunteer, via the net, and either contacting them by
E-mail, or giving the telephone number to the person needing the help.
This shouldn't take too long, so the amount of time needed to spend on the
lister's behalf would be fairly minimal. It might even be a good idea if
all the volunteers joined something like ICQ, so they could be contacted
quickly if they were on-line. Again, that ID # need only been given to
those maintaining the 'helper list'.
So far we have had most of the interest in the US, but we have had a few
people in Australia wanting to sign up, and I am not suggesting that they
call the 'States, so we would have one of them maintain the 'helper list'
there.
I have kept a list of those people that have contacted me directly, and
also those people that have informed the list in general, so those folks
don't need to contact me again. When we have all decided what the format
should be, whoever is going to maintain this list should contact them again
if they need more info than we already have.
If anyone has any more suggestions I would be more than happy to hear
from
you. Let me know what you think so far, especially about the ICQ thing.
