I coudn't disagree with you more about tapered roller bearing preload. Tapered
roller bearings are NOT ball bearings which are designed to run with a slight
clearance.
Unlike ball bearings, tapered rollers are separable (cup and cone). The cup is
the outer race and the cone is the inner race that comes assembled with the
cage and rollers.
These bearings MUST be preloaded to run properly.....if not, their load
bearing capability will be GREATLY diminished.
If they aren't preloaded, the rollers will relax slightly in the raceway and
create a point load on the stub shaft resulting in possible failure.
