Hello all! I believe the spacer and shims is to preload the inner races of the
bearings against the collar at the back of the stub axle and the nut and
locating washer without undue preload on the bearings. This keeps the inner
race from spinning on the stub axle, which can eventually wear the axle and
the race, and lead to worse happenings like the race actually chewing the
locater tab off of the washer and spinning the castle nut down tight (right
wheel) or off ( left wheel) The shims are to be added/ removed to get the
proper preload on the bearings while maintaining the greater preload on the
inner races. This acts similar to a crush sleeve on a differential pinion
gear.
Hope this made sense? ,' ^ )
