I am struggling with my '61 MGA gas gauge and could use
some help. Here is what I have done so far. The gauge
itself was check out by Nisongers and is OK. I then
disconnected the wire at the sending unit and from the
gauge and checked it with a continuity tester. The wire
is OK With the car running the gauge usually reads
from half full to three quarters full. When the wire is
disconnected from the sending unit and ground the
gauge goes to full which I am told indicates that
everything is OK. All of the above would suggest
that the sending unit in the gas tank is the culprit.
How do I test the sending unit without taking it out of the
car? Can I use a multi-meter to test it when the talk is
full and again when it is close to empty?
If I take it out of the car how do I test it? Can I ground
it and move the float up and down while attached to the
sending unit wire and gauge?
Should I try to fix it myself, send it to a specialist to fix
it or should I buy a new one from one of the Mail order
houses?
When I reinstall it should I use Permitted?
