After Saturday, I'm an actual bonified MGB owner, having driven Mike
Robson's old '72 back to Boston from CT. It was idling a little rough, so I
thought I'd start easy, replace the rotor, distributer cap, plugs (I know
you said they were new, Mike, but I figured at $.99 each, I'd do everything
at once), and HT ignition wires. I had a timing light, so I figured I was
all set.
With the new distributor parts and wires in place and the plugs
gapped, I starting looking for the timing marks. I found the one on the
crankshaft pulley easily enough, but the mark on the block wasn't as
obvious. In my Haynes manual, it shows a picture of a toothed piece of
steel that indicates TDC, and a few increments BTDC. I found nothing at all
like that on the engine. I looked on the top and bottom sides of the
pulley. The only thing I found was a single piece that stuck down just
below the pulley on the bottom. I figured that had to mark TDC, but there
were no other marks.
Am I just supposed to guestimate where I should be, or am I not
looking for the right thing/in the right place, or do I try to measure it
out? The only other engine I've timed had a timing scale making it easy to
get the right angle, but I don't know about this one. Any ideas?
