O/D to Gearbox Case

I am having a heck of a time getting the od case and gearbox case to mate.
It get 1/2" from matching and won't go any farther. I thought it was the
pump follower hitting the cam, but it stops short. It appears to not be
going into the rear bearing housing. Any body experience this before?
