Mike: Have you checked the points for grounding? Examine the ones youre using
now or the old ones and look for blue/black spots, especially on the arc of
the spring, that are a sign of grounding.( Or watch for sparking with the cap
off in the dark while someone cranks the engine) Sometimes if the points are
not installed properly this spring will touch the distributor body when the
vacuum advance starts (sorry, I am not familiar with TD distibutors do they
have vaccum advance?). Or if the insulating washers are missing or not
installed properly on the mounting post this will also cause the points to
ground. Another thought: The spade connectors on the coil can come loose and
spin on the rivet, resulting in a weak or intermittant low tension
