Hello all,
First, the flat black paint under the hood...don't do this to your
car...you'll regret it. If you have a great paint job, and have this under
the hood, it is like wearing a sandwich sign that says "Amateur Boy Racer".
Racers paint the underhood area light grey or even white because, among
other reasons, it makes fluid leaks easier to detect.
I sold a Primrose car several years ago for 7 grand American....any color,
even mustard yellow or baby excrement brown, will sell to someone. There's
a butt for every seat.
Painting your car using the two part paint systems now available requires
at least a respirator and fresh air circulation to be safe. The best way
is to use a fresh air supply supplied from a dedicated supply pump and a
full face shield....and remember to put that pump in an area that won't
have fumes reaching it.
Some of the paint systems from various makers require a clear coat; some
don't. Check before you pony up the big bucks that paint costs now.
Some of the auto manufacturers have caved in to the global warming idiots,
and are trying to use water based paints....don't even think about this
stuff right now; the major car makers that use it are taking it on the chin
with warranty paint repairs right now.
As to guns: the new High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) guns are great....I
have retired my Binks. The HVLP guns allow you to waste less paint and
hence less money, because less paint bounces off of the surface that you
are painting. In addition, you don't have those annoying little water
droplets in your new paint because the day turned humid and your line dryer
wasn't up to the job; the HVLP supplies warm, dry air from the turbine.
In short: 1) Talk to the paint supplier about the gear you need (including
protective gear), whether a clear coat is required, and remember that the
best paint in the world won't cover crappy prep work.
