I had a similar problem on my 76 MGB. It would backfire and miss and the
tach would die when I tried to accelerate or climb a hill. I eventually
replaced the Allison Electronic Ignition (FOrrunner of the Crane) with the
Hall effect Ignitor. The problems went away. Haven't had a similar
problem since.
If you do not want to replace the entire ignition. I would suggest that
you might consider widening the gaps in the vanes of the light chopper and
insure that the LED and detector are well positioned over the light chopper.
