To all those who inquired about installing a headlight relay in a B: I
downloaded the information at www.team.net/sol/, the "Scions of Lucas". It was
under "tech info", titled (appropriately enough) "lighting system upgrade".
Very informative and detailed.
I checked the JC Whitney catalog, and they still carry the dual headlight
relay ($19) and the lights themselves for about $40/pair for the 60/55 watt,
which is what I installed. I didn't have the cojones to install the 100/80
watts, but if anyone does, let me know how it turned out.
Installation was merely splicing the relay into the blue/white and blue/red
wires going to the headlights. A separate heavy gauge wire is run to the relay
to 12v. The lights themselves draw off this new wire, while the low-amp relays
run through the dimmer switch. I used a spare MG fuse block, mounted next the
old one, to tap off of. A wire was run from the fuse block to the starter
terminal to pickup 12V from the battery. Very simple/effective. I even
painted the relay a close color to the "Tahiti blue" of the 77B, and put a
piece of rubber under the relay, which mounted on the passenger side fender
wall. Looks fairly original, works well. The lights themselves have flat
glass, which looks nice.
Why didn't MG put in this relay when they were built?
