Hi Barney, Don't think I've ever seen a coil on which the case was electrically connected to the windings. Rather, the points side of the coil is connected to both the primary and secondary windings and is grounded through the points when they are closed. The case is isolated from all this. Interestingly, the old Harley vee twins fired the plugs on every crankshaft rotation, so there was a wasted spark. Harley folks averred that the extra spark kept the plug from fouling!
