The jack-shaft that drives the distributor on these engines, had a
threaded 5/16 ANF ( UNF) hole in the centre of the 'D' drive, that is
there to enable you to screw in a stud, ( ie a rocker cover one...) to
lower and align the shaft into its hole. This usually takes a few
attempts, to get the larger half of the 'D' at the correct angle, (see
workshop manual for this.) Once in correctly you just unscrew the stud!
Here, in the UK, many a Mini and Metro ( both fwd cars,) has had a
wrecked engine because this shaft fell into the sump, but in these
cases, the GEARBOX. Perhaps the owner hoped it would 'disappear?
