My answer to a good stereo in my first car was such:
Speakers 6 1/2 inch JBL 3 way speakers with a generic
grating so no-one can tell what brand they are. I think I
bought the grating at radio shack.
A removable face stereo for 150ish dollars. The speakers I
don't worry about b/c who the hell would steal "cheap"
speakers. And the face isn't a problem to carry around with
me. When I don't feel like taking it, I usually just a)
stick it under the seat, or b) give it to the girlfriend to
carry <grin>.
The speakers cost ~$90 per pair and sound great (my 300z has
the same pair in the front).
