I was initially impressed with the maturity of the lad who asked the
question (I dont think i had a rational thought until about age 27 - and
not that many since then!)
I have read the responses to this with interest - i dont disagree with
any of them - all extremely valid points, then i remembered back to when
i was that age and the first few bangers that i went through, most of
them were very close to the end of their useful lives and i certainly
finished a few of them off (i still have a piece of engine block from an
exploded A40 engine - exploded cos i couldnt afford a quart of oil that
week!)
So the sensible route is definitely to learn, and make your first
mistakes, on a honda or similar but then at 16, you dont need to be
totally sensible ...... also i note that your family are offering to
help work on it,( and hopefully pay for the odd bit that drops off) its
hard to find much in common with your dad when youre 16,17,18, but there
are two things that you always have in common, sports and cars - two
subjects that can be discussed enthusiatically without it turning into a
row! - At 16 my father and i worked on my cars together (well - he did
the work, i handed him spanners and turned the radio up) it was always a
great experience and we still talk about it now - in fact its a good job
he's 3000 miles away or he'd be under the bonnet of mine now!

So theres no easy answer, my daughter is 15 and we are looking for a GT
for her
(do you REALLY believe its for her - hehe) Im hoping its something we
will share before she flies the nest - so really, it COULD be an easy
answer, follow your heart on it, it might be more than a mode of
transportation!
