Earlier today I wrote about my lowbeam headlights not working
correctly and mentioned I also had a problem with the turn signal
switch not working correctly. Many of you wrote with suggestions, and
for that I thank you all. My lights are now working, here's what I
did.
I cleaned the plugs in the back of the headlights, no change. I
replaced a burned out 1156 turn signal bulb, now the signal light
works but still no lowbeams. I have never had working parking lights
so I grabbed my electrical schematic and found that there should be
three red wires plugged together by the right firewall, I had only two
plugged together. The third was "capped off" with a female Lucas
connector. I plugged all three red wires together and got parking
lights, still no lowbeams. I decided to clean all the male and
female Lucas connectors in front of the radiator. This turned out to
be very interesting. It seems that a previous owner (or possibly the
body shop) decided that he/she could plug any wire anywhere until the
lights turned on. I'm not sure why my lights ever worked and I'm not
sure why they quit now. Some things only the Prince of Darkness can
explain. So I cleaned all the connectors and plugged the correct
wires together: you know; all the blacks together, and the blue/reds
together, and the blue/whites together (apparently the last person
that did this didn't understand that concept). Well whatdaya know,
lowbeams. Everything works fine.
I still cannot move the turn signal switch to the left hand turn
position while the highbeams are on. I suspect this is a mechanical
breakage within the turn signal switch and the switch will have to be
replaced someday.
I am going to buy some new Lucas connectors and some "No-Ox" grease, I
suspect this would be a great thing for all LBC owners to inventory.
Thanks for all the help.
