Well folks, took the starter to the local specialist...the starter is fine
apparently, but the solenoid is shot.
$43 (waiting for the part) and I should be on the road by the weekend. :)
BTW, if you live in a rural area like me, Lucas is a common sight to the
guys that work on alternators and starters -- lots of Lucas starters on
tractors! And every "country" repair guy I've met is as friendly and honest
as you could want. This guy said this type Lucas solenoid is a "common"
part, but the starter motor itself is not.
