To my knowledge its not the gear, but the original brass
baulk (synchro) ring that was considered 'a weak link' ...
in December '65 (18GB-U-H/31417, 18GB-U-L/29123,
18GB-RU-H/31003, 18GB-RU-L/25995) an 'improved' second gear
(22H230)and steel baulk ring (22H249)were introduced ...
my guess, the 'improvements' made to the gear were only
those required to accept the steel baulk ring. The baulk
rings/gears are not interchangeable ... IOW, the brass baulk
ring (11G3063) can't be utilized with the new gear and the
steel baulk ring can't be used with the old gear.
