It certainly can, if the head is not fitted with hardened valves and
seats. Each time the valve closes it 'welds' itself to the seat. When it
opens again microscopic particles of material are plucked from the
surface. In time this will cause valve seat regression. Lead additives
coat the valve and seat and reduce this process.
Light driving with non-hardened seats should not cause a problem for many
1000s of miles, but if you drive your MG hard - as it should be! - and
the valves will wear out quickly.
