Dan,
It was suggested that you fill the transmission from a bottle held high
in the car. Here's a trick that works for me--get a drill-driven pump at
the hardware store, one that uses 1/4" tubing (not the garden hose size).
Then, measure the trans oil into one jug, and pump from that jug into the
trans. This way you can keep the oil supply outside the car Much faster
than waiting seemingly forever for the viscous stuff to flow by itself.
Why did they do it this way? My theory is that much of this minor
service was expected to be done by the owner. Look at the handbook for
the detail of owner maintenance illustrations and text. In the early
cars, before they got so filled with comfort features, the filler hole
was easier to reach. Besides, that's the way they did it in the A, and
the T-series cars. For a real hoot, look sometime at the owner
maintenance program for the mid-thirties Magnettes! The later
transmissions, with the side fill port, are easy for the professional to
work on. They put the car on a lift, stand under, and then use a pump to
push the oil in until it overflows. Nothing to measure, just pump and
plug. We owners have to fill the trans with turkey basters taken from
the kitchen. Subsequent turkeys may taste odd, but they sure are not
dry.
