Sounds like the engine was built by Rex Hutchinson's Racing Engines here
in Sacramento. They are pretty well known for big American iron around
here, but they also do British engines if provoked.  They've been around
a long time.  I took my MG 1100 engine there for balancing way back in
1977, no problems.
Their phone number is (916) 483-9563.  They may be able to tell you
something about the guts of the engine.
