Philip,
I had a similair proble once with my MGC/GT. Of course this could be
alot of things but here is one that you would not normally think of. My=
C would
idle fine, rev up at a stand still, timing was OK and mixture was check=
ed and
rechecked by examining spark plugs and vacuum on each SU and still when=
I took
her on the road she just would not pull the wieght of the car up a hill=
or past
1st gear. It ended up being a *** TWISTED *** line in the Jet Assembly.=
Look at
your manual and identify the Jet Assembly as it inserts into the bottom=
of the
SU Body on one end and attaches to the Foat Chamber on the other end. =
What had
happened, was that the line that supplies fuel from the float chamber t=
o the
Body was *** TWISTED **** restricting the flow of fuel and thus reducin=
g power.
It allowed enough fuel to pass through without load but as soon as a lo=
ad was
put on the engine it was starved of fuel.
Check it out by sliding down the spring cover that surrounds the jet li=
ne or
examining the line itself if no spring is covering the jet line.
Hope this helps,
