I had exactly the same problem with my 72 a few months back.
In my case, the problem turned out to be a poor ground through the
starter itself, to the block (rear mount plate). What I did was to remove
the starter and clean the area on the face of the starter that mounted
against the engine, and likewise the area on the engine where the starter
mounted. Problem ended.
As a long term solution, I added a ground strap from the upper starter
mounting bolt to the chassis. You can pick up one ready made with the
correct ends from the local chain auto parts stores.
