Scott, I think you are correct your engine was originally mated with an
OD transmission. But who knows which is correct for your car. I think
the 1280 speedo is the correct number for the non OD car. When I put the
OD in my 1969 I removed the 1280 speedo.
So get this. This is from Clausager's book, Original MGB:
"The gearbox numbers typically have a maximum of four figures, with a
number/letter prefix. Where gearbox numbers are entered in the
production records (1965-72 only), the serial number is recorded without
prefix. It is therefore not possible to refer a gearbox number to a
chassis number, or to date those gearbox changes which are recorded only
by a gearbox number in the parts lists."
I'm not sure what he is saying here (yes, I checked to see if I copied
this right!) but I suspect it says you'll never know if the car came with
a OD or not.
Maybe someone else out there can clear this up.
