Aftermarket aircleaners

Guys,
I hate to bust your bubble, but back when the MGB was a dominant force in E
Production, and was required to run the 1 1/2" carbs, NOBODY ran stock
aircleaners.
Some guys ran K&N filters, though.  Makes you wonder how those guys did it,
huh?
Must have been through some work and experimentation with a variety of
jet/needle combinations. 
I don't know what the guys that can't make their engines run are doing
wrong, but it isn't the aircleaner.
