Well, in general it doesn't, or at least it's not the
panacea that some beleive.
However, in a modern sports car with an ECU and a knock
sensor, it'll always run the most ragged timing it can
without detecting knock or the onset of knock.
If you run crud gas, you will never hear knock, but you
are getting spark retard from the ECU.
Fun with knock sensors, hook up a timing light, watch
the timing marks, then strike the head with a socket. The
timing will retard a few degrees, then eventually creep
back to normal.
