Chassis vs. VIN numbers

I am a little confused about some of the chassis, engine and VIN #'s.
For the 1980 Limited Edition MGB's, the Chassis? number listed may be
for example:  GVVDJ2AG521921.  If the last of the LE cars was number
GVVDJ2AG523001, does it mean that there were 1080 more cars made and
is this number now a VIN (for the US market) and not just a chassis
number? The format of the number seems to differ greatly from 
previous numbers.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
