Hi John,
You may be having troubles at the starter, strangely enough.
MG, in its infinite wisdom, brought the main power lead forward from
the battery to the large terminal on the starter. Down there it's
protected from cleanliness and dryness by all the road crud, water, tar
and stones that can be kicked up by your wheels or those of anyone else
on the road.
There in this morass, they then connected a brown wire that goes up to
feed all the rest of your electrics. If that by any chance is harmed,
say at the connection, you're stopped. You may find that the brown wire
is broken in most of its strands, leaving just enough juice flowing to
give you an indication of voltage, but not enough to do any good. Been
under there myself......
