Scott,
You could have a bad head gasket and not notice any water in the oil. I
blew one in the Escort this summer and the only symptom was steam
blowing out the tailpipe. When I drained the oil, I saw no water, so I
assume it all evaporated in the heat of the engine. Anyway, there was a
small distortion in the gasket around one of the bolts and the bolt hole
was full of coolant. Sucked the coolant out of the bolt hole with a
turkey baster and put on a new head gasket. It's been running fine ever
since.
You can check the surfaces for warpage with a straight-edge. Lay it
along the surface from all directions to make sure everything is
straight. Look very carefully for cracks while you have the head off
too.
