 While it is true that OD is not necessary, and there are several hundred
thousand MGs running around without it, OD is a desirable option for most
people driving today's American highways. In your case of the 70 miles @
90mph, it would not have increased your top speed, but would have made 90
somewhat more pleasant for both you and the engine.  OD won't eliminate
wear in the engine, but it will reduce the rate of wear. It won't mean
that you don't have to buy gasoline, but it will reduce the consumption
of the stuff and extend the cruising range on a tank.
  To quote a lyric of the days of yore, OD is "nice work if you can get
it."
