Overdrive

OK,

I've been reading all this stuff about overdrives and I have a question.

Would someone please enlighten me on the use of the overdrive?
When I am driving I get to speed and then engage the overdrive.  Is this 
correct? Or should I just leave it on and let it take care of it self?  All 
the talk about how expensive OD's are I'm a little scared that I'm not right.
