Well, I talked to John today about the engine. Turns out the #1 main
bearing went belly-up. Are the journals numbered front to rear, or
vice versa? (It's nice that the hobby shop on base has all the
manuals, but I really wish I had a set here...) There was also a
groove near the rear main journal possibly causing some of my oil
leakage. He took the crank to a different machine shop, and decided
to replace it with a used one in better shape. Had the used one
polished and double-checked just to make sure I won't end up with a
different set of problems. Also checked the rods for straightness
again. Going with a new set of oil cooler lines and new oil cooler
as well. It's possible that there was a blockage that only became a
problem under pressure, not when he was pouring kerosene through them
under gravity.
He also said that he replaced the relief valve last time, but that
lapping it into its seat with some grinding paste sounded like a good
idea. He's also going to double-check the valve seat in the block.
More when I find out.. Need to ask how the oil pump looked, too.
