Hi everyone! Wow there's a lot going on with this list. It sure isn't boring.
I was wondering if I could tap into the great expanse of knowledge and ask
about an alternator problem. My '79 MGB alternator is on the fritz. Can the
internal components be bench tested with a digital volt/ohm meter to
determine if they are working? When I checked the Haynes manual it suggested
that a competent auto electrical shop be contacted to test the unit. (Maybe
not those exact words) I don't want to contact a competent auto electrical
shop. I can read a meter, I just need to know what specs to check for. Plus,
I hate to go out and buy a rebuilt unit or internal parts if not really
needed. The diode pack looks to be in good condition (no burns or loose
diodes) and the regulator "appears" OK. Who knows what's going on inside. I
also cleaned the brushes and contact surfaces. The wiring leading to the
alternator also checked out OK. If anyone has any specs it would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks to all.
